Top 12 Albums of 2004

December 19, 2004 | Comments 19 Comments

Summary: Just a little top 12 list…

Yeah, I know I missed the song of the week this week. I was away with no internet access—the horror. I wasn’t totally idle though, and I do hope to make it up this next week. As well as getting back into the habit of more regular posting soon.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand…I’m asked all the time to recommend music so I thought I’d take a stab at my favorite albums from the last year. I figured it’d be best to get this out before the end of the year, just in case some of y’all want to buy yourself a gift. I highly recommend everything on this list, it was pretty hard to choose favorites. Anyway — here goes.

  • 12 - To The 5 Boroughs by Beastie Boys
  • 11 - Hot Fuss by The Killers
  • 10 - Good News For People Who Love Bad News by Modest Mouse
  • 9 - The Grey Album by DJ Dangermouse
  • 8 - Peace Love Death Metal by The Eagles of Death Metal
  • 7 - A Grand Don’t Come For Free by The Streets
  • 6 - She Like Electric by Smoosh
  • 5 - American Idiot by Green Day
  • 4 - Funeral by Arcade Fire
  • 3 - The Kiss Off by Pris
  • 2 - Wet From Birth by The Faint

And my favorite album of 2004 is:

  • 1 - Shake The Sheets by Ted Leo and The Pharmacists

Honorable mention:

  • Final Straw by Snow Patrol (had the import in 2003 so doesn’t really count)
  • Dirty South by Drive by Truckers
  • Almost Killed Me by The Hold Steady
  • From The Attic by Damone
  • Catalyst by New Found Glory
  • Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes by TV on The Radio
  • Franz Ferdinand by Franz Ferdinand
  • Silence in Black and White by Hawthorne Heights
  • Gold Metal by The Donnas
  • Your A Woman, I’m a Machine by Death From Above 1979

So, what do you think? Agree? Disagree? What were your favorites this year?

I didn’t really have a lot of “OMG!!1” moments in music this year. 2003 did it a lot better for me—A Perfect Circle (eMOTIVe was okay, but not fantastic), Death Cab For Cutie, the Deftones, Radiohead, Stone Temple Pilots…

Honestly, now I’m just waiting for Tool’s upcoming release. Drummer Danny Carey has said a little bit about it, and I think it’s going to be awesome. Granted, their past releases will be tough to top… but it should be good, nevertheless.

Wow, nice mention of The Arcade Fire, I love them. Also, I think Franz Ferdinand should’ve been up there ;) Me and you seem to have a very similar taste in music.

I thought To The 5 Boroughs was the weakest album the Beasties have done. Listen to Hello Nasty again. Then 5 Boroughs. I know there’s something to be said for stripping it down and keeping it old school, but given they had 6 years to work on it, I felt a bit short-changed.

    In no particular order

    • Who Killed The Zutons? - The Zutons
    • A Grand Doesn’t Come for Free - The Streets
    • Council Estate of Mind - Skinnyman
    • Milk-Eyed Mender - Joanna Newsom
    • Antics - Interpol
    • Hot Fuss - The Killers
    • The Grey Album - DJ Danger Mouse
    • Heroes to Zeros - Beta Band
    • Faded Seaside Glamour - The Delays
    • 22-20s - 22-20s
    • Showtime - Dizzee Rascal

p.s. If you like Final Straw by Snow Patrol but don’t already own their previous LP ‘When it’s all over we still have to clear up’ then you need to get it quick sharpish.

Finally, a list with several artists I’ve never heard of. Keith, I’m off to investigate The Faint, Arcade Fire, and Smoosh straight away.

Incidentally, seeing as everyone and their Grandma loves The Grey Album, I wonder how the record companies are feeling about it now it’s a cultural icon. Think of all the money a legitimate release would’ve made them.

Here are a few of my faves:

    • Feel Good Lost - Broken Social Scene (absolutely sublime)
    • One Moment More - Mindy Smith (sweet and tender country folk)
    • Things Done and Left Undone - Jonathan Inc. (smart and literate with hooks to spare)
    • Retriever - Ron Sexsmith (critics love him, but few others, it seems, have heard of him)

    Hmmmm…

    • the noose - a perfect circle (actually, I liked the whole thirteenth step album, and yes, I realize it was released in 2003, but it was late in the year, and I didn’t discover it until early 2004, so it counts in my book)

    • Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 - Korn - This has some of Korn’s best music IMHO, all really good heavy metal type of stuff.

That’s about it for music that I really liked enough to buy for this year.

Forget that Beastie album, here’s some more hip-hop from this year, minus bling of course.

    - Mos Def - The New Danger

    - Jedi Mind Tricks - Outerspace

    - The Roots - The Tipping Point

    - De La Soul - The Grind Date

And a little fly soundtrack action…

    - Ocean’s Twelve OST

Peace Love Death Metal by The Eagles of Death Metal. Wow, I just grabbed this as it was on several top lists of the year. I’m stunned at how good it is.

Other albums I am considering for my top 10 list this year include:

    • Sasha - Involver

    • Dieselboy - The Dungeonmasters Guide (D&B)

    • Seamen/Phil K - Therapy Sessions

    • Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand

Sure is nice to have so much great music out there to choose from.

Joanna Newsome - The Milk-Eyed Mender
The Walkmen - Bows and Arrows

    Junior Boys - Last Exit
    Sufjan Stevens - Seven Swans

Bjork, Mirah, Iron and Wine, Cee-Lo, Madvillain, Ratatat, Dizzee Rascal, Arcade Fire,

It’s amazing how divergent people’s tastes are – especially when they agree about so many other things.

Generally I agree with Keith’s musical taste (obviously we’re both men of refined taste), but I of course have my own opinion as to the best albums of 2004:

    * Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
    * The Libertines - The Libertines
    * A Night At The Hip Hopera - The Kleptones (MP3 download only - Queen VS Hip Hop samples)
    * Antics - Interpol
    * Hot Fuss - The Killers (looks like a popular one)
    * Good News For People Who Love Bad News - Modest Mouse
    * Reves Mecaniques - The Hacker (tech-house/techno)
    * Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters
    * Wet From Birth - The Faint

Looks like it was a good year for the 80s at least!

As for The Streets, well… the whole geezer garage thing just gets to me. I can’t shake it, as much as I WANT to like the album. It’s quite sad, really.

The Gray Album was far and away my favorite. Although I have a soft spot in my heart for the GTA: San Andreas soundtrack, if that counts. Nothing like reliving hits of the early 90’s. I think it’s everything that those trashy compliation CD’s advertised on TV could be.

As an additional note, The Faint are touring Australia in just 2 weeks time. That’s awesome and came totally out of left field to me.
