I’m not really sure how to describe Death From Above 1979 except to say that I really like ‘em. They’ve got a kind of dance-metal-industrial-classic-rock thing going that is hard to pin down and label. It’s energetic, has a wicked groove to it, and is very fun to listen to in a head-banging, rock-sign-in-the-air, epileptic-seizure kind of way.
It’s perfect music to get hyphy to. All the kids are doing it.
While I’m not sure DFA 1979 will ever get much mainstream radio play, I do expect them to continue to have a bit of a buzz. They kind of remind me, without sounding much like them, of The Eagles of Death Metal. Although maybe it’s just the name? Maybe they should combine to form one huge, whacked out super group—“Death From Above from The Eagles of Death Metal…1979?” Maybe not. Either way, I’d not be surprised to hear them in a car commercial some time soon.
You’re A Woman, I’m a Machine is a very solid debut album. It’s one of those albums where it’d be really hard to choose a single. Many of the songs have “hit” quality and while they do carry a theme, there’s enough different flavors in there to keep most people interested all the way through. There’s no filler in here.
In choosing this week’s song I actually had to go through a few times, and I changed my mind quite a bit. I know I’ve found something with some staying power when I’ve been listening to something for a few months and I still have a hard time picking out a favorite. I decided to go with “Little Girl” for a few reasons.
First and foremost, I love the driving rhythms on this one and the vocals are pretty catchy as well. It’s got kind of a Led Zeppelin meets The Faint sound. Second, it’s the longest song on an album that’s comprised of punk-length songs. At a whopping four minutes, it’s almost epic.
Short songs or no, DFA 1979 is a great band with a unique sound and style that I highly recommend you check out.

I love this shizz. Great album. Hopefully we’ll catch them at SXSW. Top priority!! Also one of the best album covers I’ve seen in ages. Makes me want to buy it on record. You could probably also recommend it to fans of Whirlheat Heat and Peaches.

It’s funny that you mention hearing this song in a commercial someday. A week ago, I saw an ad for Teen Titans on Cartoon Network and “Little Girl” was the backing track. My respect for that network grew tenfold. Well, maybe not, but I still thought it was pretty cool to hear an almost unknown song in a cartoon ad spot.

Definately one the best tracks on the album. An awesome album to listen to over and over. I have seen them live and put one of the hardest driving shows ever… with only two people. I have seen bands with 3 guitarists not have as much energy as jesse and sebastien. They have a great dialogue between them during the show. Very funny. If you ever have a chance to see them, even as a opening band, take it. It will be worth your while. I hope these two continue to crank out their music for years to come.

This is such an old post, but I thought I’d weigh in on this CD. I read this entry in January, listened to the sample here, got the CD, listened to it for about 2 months straight, and repeatedly pestered my younger brother to get it.
I saw them live in Portland in March - and they are unbelievable. Recently, I spoke with my brother, and he conceded that he’d just recently started listening to them, and they were all he listened to. I assured him that eventually, he’d be able to listen to other bands again.
