This week I was short on time and unsure of what to choose as my Song of The Week, so I decided to let iTunes do it for me. I put it on shuffle, gave it one of my recent playlists and let it go. It made an almost perfect choice.
“Robot” by Futureheads.
A great song from one of the best bands to come out in a long while. I’ve been wanting to do a song from them for a bit now, and I suppose if I was to choose I’d have selected “Hounds of Love” their amazing Kate Bush cover, for its wide appeal. It’s also a great song.
However, one of the reasons I love these guys is they remind me so much of a band that is very, very near and dear to my heart—The Jam—and “Robot” carries that Jam-ish sound very well.
Futureheads might be one of the most “punk” of the punk bands to come around in awhile. When I say “punk” I mean it in the most original and true sense of the genre. Sure, I’m into some of what some of the kids today might call “punk”, but this is real punk.
Really.
Like many of the excellent throwback bands that are popping up all over the place, The Futureheads seem to capture a sound from days gone by and capture that sound very, very well. One thing they have that others don’t is that they have touched on a sound that, until now, hasn’t been done all that well by many.
If you’re into that original brit-punk you’ll enjoy Futureheads—no doubt about it. Amongst lots of great music that came out last year, these guys stand out in many ways. Give ‘em a listen.

Hmm, have you ever listened to Jupiter Sunrise, Keith? They sound amazingly like this band. Man, these guys seem pretty good. I think I’ll check them out. Thanks for the suggestion.

I’m sorry, I feel like an idiot. I had Jupiter Sunrise playing in iTunes and I thought it was this window that was playing. Hah.
Anyways, I’m listening now and they’re awesome anyways. Sorry for the second comment, just don’t wanna make myself feel like an idiot.

Kate Bush?
I am a closet Kate Bush fan from the olden days. And if you like Ms. Bush this is good news:
She’s teaming up with Mick Karn (grestest fretless bass player since Jaco, and Perter Erskine, another Weather Report alumni.) Should be a great album, that is, if you’re a fan. Otherwise just ignore this comment.
I’ve never heard of the Futureheads until now, I’ll give it a listen.

This is decent, but I prefer Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. I can’t stop listening to Wet from Birth by the Faint at the moment though.
