Change Is Coming

April 12, 2005 | Comments 15 Comments

I just got back to Seattle from a fun and tiring trip to Whistler for the Telus Ski and Snowboard Festival. I’ve got lots of catching up still to do, but I wanted to make y’all aware of some upcoming changes to Asterisk.

I’d planned on launching my new, redesigned and restructured site on May first for the CSS Reboot but due to the fact that I’m a bit snowed under and have some other projects I’d like to crank on, that’s not going to happen. I’ve been working on it for too long and my progress has been…pretty lame actually.

Instead I’m going to launch it this weekend and, well, it’s not quite done. As well, I’m not actually redesigning, I’m starting a whole new site…Well, kind of. I’m not 100% how it’s going to work out, but it may be a mess for a few days after I flip the switch. I’m hoping you’ll bare with me and that you’ll enjoy the new site.

Just as an FYI — the main reason I’m not just doing a redesign is that I’m really wanting to change up my writing style as well as the categories and topics I write in. This warrants a restructure that my current, very heavily hacked templates and entries would have just been a nightmare to work out. I think for most of you this will be a nice thing as I’m going to keep it “on Web” a bit more and move some of my more off-topic posts to another site (or sites)—more on that later. It’s not going to be too much a departure, but it will allow me to focus on some different things as well as keep the stuff most of you come here for flowing.

If nothing else, it should make for some interesting archiving.

Awesome. Whichever way you end up going, I’m sure I’m not alone when I say that I’ll be anxious to see what you come up with. Good luck!

P.S. I hope one of those ‘other’ sites brings back the Song of the Week.

It’s about time we get to see this new design, what’s it been like 4 or 5 months in the making? I’m just kidding, you know :)

Why are you releasing the new design this weekend as opposed to May 1st?

How was Whistler, last time I was there it was all rain (middle of winter)…very disappointing, especially considering the drive to get there (Sacramento, CA -> Whistler).

I’m looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us all. I’m sure it will be enough to keep me busy, reading through it for a while :)

Looking forward to the new design/direction.

I and a few rounds with myself this weekend on trying to get a full blown new site up and came to the conclusion that I didn’t have time to do it right with all the other things I have going on. So, I decided to put up a temp page to replace the outdated Flash site. I still have some work to do for the temp but I feel much more relaxed about the whole thing.

Are you still going to stick with MovableType? I’m looking at going the Symphony route, but just might end up on WordPress or TextPatterm (I’m such a CMS harlot).

Jsutin: You drove up from Sacto, damn.

Brandon – I think the Song of The Week will come back in some form.

Justin – Well, I need to get it up so I can finish it off and begin work on some other stuff. It’s just taking to long and the longer I wait the harder it is to finish off. Oh and Whister was loads of fun. The snow was pretty darn good up top.

Kevin – Yes I’m sticking with MT. I don’t have time to learn something else right now. Symphony looks great though. As far as getting something up temp helping with stress, I think I agree with that notion. ;)

Man, it seems that we all have some “more on that later” stuff going on!

Looking forward to it Keith, we need a little shakeup around here, so I say ;-)

Hi there,

I’ve been following your weblog for quite some time and have always been impressed with the content and of course, the clean layout. I eagerly look forward to the new design you are talking about and am sure you’ll make it exciting. Let’s have it… soon! :-)

I was in Whistler last weekend as well. 4 days of bumming around Whistler is always a good vacation. Funny that we should be so close. :-)

Can’t wait to see your restructuring come to fruition. I’m trying to do something similar myself as we speak.

Cheers,
Jeremy

Ultimate patience here, and, speaking as a regular reader, I’m sure everything will work out fine.

Thought it was funny that you wrote you wanted us to “bare” (sic) with you. Were you bare when you wrote that?

Joel – HAHA! You are the big “spelling and grammar police” winner! I actually saw that before I posted (yes it was unintention at first, one of my “gotchas”) and thought, “I wonder how long it’ll take for someone to catch it. Let’s leave it and see if it slips by.”

As I’m preparing to launch my own site, I battle often with what “topics” to talk about and whether the site “theme” is something that 1) is interesting to write about 2) is interesting to read about 3) not so broad so as to entertain no one and alienate everyone.

There are so many topics I find interesting – and to make a separate site for each group of topics (sports, technology, business, the web, etc) would be impossible.

So I settled on a generic theme that’s just about… me. And everyone can adjust. I just hope that works well.

How did you all go about deciding what to focus on?

I think you don’t have worry about what to focus on. I see no problem. If we won’t like to read it, we won’t. Simple as that. Just try to bedazzle us with good articles on whatsoever.

Best of luck on the re-design. I know the pain of trying to work on a project while juggling other projects at the same time. Not fun.

Thanks for the CSS Reboot link. Very cool stuff.
