Backpack First Impressions

Today I was lucky enough to receive a “Golden Ticket” from Jason Fried and the folks at 37Signals to check into their new product/service—Backpack. While I’ve not spent a whole lot of time with it (an hour or so) and I’m not able to utilize every feature, I am able to give y’all a pretty good snapshot of the product and what it’s all about.

It seems in many ways to be a personal version of Basecamp. It’s got some of the same features, a similar UI and the philosophy behind it is basically the same. It’s a personal information manager and organizer. It’s got a to-dos, notes, calendaring, reminders and thing like that. Pretty much what you’d expect. It’s also got the 37signal’s style—ease of use, simple yet useful, etc.

Notable features (that I’ve seen so far)

Some of the things I see as particularly useful are the reminders feature, which allows you to set up reminders that’ll be sent to you via e-mail or, even better, SMS. I tried this out and it works very well. To me this is worth paying for in of itself. Oh, and it’s got a “live” countdown.

So that and the “e-mail Backpack” feature.

I was just thinking a week or so ago how I wish this was something built into Basecamp! Now here it is in Basecamp’s little brother. Guess great ideas have a way of getting out. Pretty much what you can do is e-mail “pages” you’ve set up. This way you can add a to-do, a note, a file, etc. via e-mail. I see this a very useful.

Backpack seems pretty cool

While I’ve not had a chance to use all of it’s features, most notably the page sharing feature, I can see how for many busy people this could be very useful. Much of what you’ve got here isn’t rocket science. I’m pretty sure there are other services out there that do pretty much the same thing, or you could cobble together a mixture of services to get the same out of it.

However, what you do have here is something that doesn’t try to do everything, and what it does do it seemed to do very well.

In many ways it reminds me of the products we used to work on at PunchNetworks, as start-up I spent a few years at a few years ago. The difference? This works better and it didn’t take 60+ people to build.

I love the fact that you can use this to share files, notes and ideas as well as keep yourself organized. You can send or share pages with people, thus allowing them into a bit of your world as needed. Everything seems very well done and easy to pick up, yet there is some power behind it all too.

I’m sure after I’ve used it a bit, I’ll have more to share, but for now, looks really good and mighty useful.

I’m sure people will say “well, I can do all this AND MORE with a wiki!”, but that’s missing the point. You don’t have to edit code to check something off a list; you just click a checkbox.

Quite frankly, if we could share our pages right now, I’d already be running one of my projects from Backpack. I already have the pages set up: feature list, list of bugs to fix, and a general to-do list for the project. Roll on Tuesday is what I say.

60+ people working on projects the size of Backpack? Sounds like an odd place to work :)

One of those would be the random email generated so you can send content to your pages. Each page that you create is assigned a random email address of the format {name}#{name}@{username}.backpackit.com … While you can keep generating random emails until you get the one you like (I was able to get {name}69{name} … easiest one for me to remember - one, because it was the number 69 - two, because it was a male and a female name. I have problems, I know.), but in general, I think its very hard to remember these email addresses.

I will eventually have a review of Backpackit up on my own site. But from what I’ve seen so far (which is very little), I can see its potential.

I posted an entry on my site as well. Basically my only complaint about it is the same as with Basecamp: a lack of payment options severely tossing aside those without credit cards–the unimportant ones.

Maybe one day they’ll give us more options, but until that day I shall make as much use of both applications as I possibly can.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I could very nearly fill up 100 alerts.

I don’t know, I just would be hesitent to drop $20/mo on a service anyways - and when that service still doesn’t have the features, or the ability to upgrade past it - I don’t see the point. Also, I’m dissapointed the ‘free’ version doesn’t get ANY file/picture upload space. Major bummer.

One thing that really bugs me is the email-it-in. I think this is an amazingly useful tool. However, with email addresses like admam28rosanne@kneath.backpackit.com - I just can’t see me being able to remember that for all my pages. Once you take away the ‘remembering’ part of the email, it loses it’s portability.

There’s also some vitally missing features here and there… just not really what I was expecting. I think it’ll be a mild success, but that’s about it. Really, it’s just a structured wiki with some awesome eye-candy.

Oh… and that non-kerned “Files” button is driving me insane. I mentioned it to David, but he just put it into the “support” system.

It’s free. If we have 50,000 people sign up for a free account, and we give away a nice chunk of space to all of them, the service quickly becomes unprofitable (which means we’d have to increase the price for the paying customers and we don’t want to do that). Bandwidth costs alone for hosting gigs and gigs of images and files for free are significant. Text is free, images and files cost money. We think that’s fair.

While the random word##word@backpackit.com email addresses can be tricky to remember, they are there for good reason (it’s much tougher to spam when there are tens of thousands of possible combinations to shuffle through before you get a direct hit).

However, there’s an easy to way to remember.

Add your page’s email addresses to your computer or cell phone’s address book and then give them your own names (“BP” as the first name and whatever you want for the last name). For example:

“BP Home” for your Backpack home page
“BP Vacation” for the page you made for your vacation
“BP Quotes” for your favorite quotes page
“BP Receipts” for your e-commerce email receipts page
…and so on.

So, instead of having to remember that john34kris@backpackit.com is your home page’s email address, you can just remember BP Home.

Also, the lack of alerts. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I could very nearly fill up 100 alerts.

100 *active* alerts. Once an alert passes then it doesn’t count against your total anymore. We will probably be increasing the Reminders limits once we see how people use them.

There’s also some vitally missing features here and there… just not really what I was expecting.

That’s the power. It does less. There are plenty of products that do more. If you’re looking for more, look there. If you’re looking for simple, useful, and easy, look at Backpack. It’s like the iPod – does much less than the rest, but it does what it does really well, looks nice, and feels nice.

As for the email.. I understand I could enter in aliases for all my pages - but that’s the problem right there. The idea behind having an email-it-in feature is you can email from anywhere. If I’m going to limit it to emailing from my phone, or Outlook on my computer - why not just go to the site and post right there? I suppose that’s my point right there. As soon as you can’t remember it, it’s more worthwhile to just go to the site itself and add it. It’s just like a domain name. I could make a bookmark for every domain I visit - but chances are I won’t. I want to be able to remember it easily.

As for the alerts thing that’s where I was really hoping for a lot. The alerts are a bit too basic. For example: What if I want to remind myself to pay a certain bill at a certain time of the month - and have the alert recurring? I can set up one at a time - but that’s kind of lame. What if I want to add in birthdays? Or maybe holiday reminders (like Mother’s day). Then, add into that all my ‘other’ alerts like “Call Susan on next Sunday” and I think that you’ll see it’s really quite easy to fill up a lot of alerts. Lack of features here actually doesn’t allow me more freedom. It boxes me in. I was also hoping alerts would have tied into to-do items, but there doesn’t seem to be any connection.

Same for the sidebar. I’d love to be able to store heirarchical data in the sidebar. Instead, I get one level - like a Wiki. What if I want to add a “section” for say - Recipes and make a page for each recipe. I would have to make a main page for recipes, and then link to all the pages from that page. It would be much more beneficial to me to just make a herarchical structure in the sidebar.

Now, I can understand that you’re running a business here Jason. But space - c’mon man. HD space is cheap. Way cheap. For $20/mo I would expect at least a gig of space. It’s really not that unreasonable to ask for. Within 6 months of my subscription alone, you could pay for a new 80GB hard drive without question. As for bandwidth? I can’t see this app using up that much bandwidth. For most people, it will be mostly private. Meaning, no one will be getting 1,000 visitors a day to their photos page. I feel trapped already when I haven’t chosen a pay-plan. I want to buy into this backpack thing, but I look at the limitations and it makes me shudder.

I suppose, for Backpack to be really useful to me I’d need to buy into it 100%. That means, do everything on it and just go with it. But, for me to do that, I feel like I need some kind of freedom. Not hardcoded limitations (like a pages limitation that really does no good at the top level). 250MB would be easy to fill up if - say - you were organizing anything with photos, music, or PDFs.

This isn’t just an issue of space. It’s also an issue of processing power. Imagine 20,000 free subscribers (or some combination of free and pay subscribers) attaching 5 photos to an email and sending them in during the course of a day. These are the sorts of scenarios you have to consider when you are building a product. It’s a lot easier to add more space and more options later than it is to take away. We’d rather underestimate now so we can reward – instead of revoke – later.

As far as needing more than 250 MB. Go fill up your 250 and then let’s talk. You don’t need 250 today. You may need 250 in a few months. And then let’s see where we’re at and how people are using the system. You can always delete old files you aren’t using anymore to free up more space. If you are really using Backpack to store over 250 MB of files you need *right now* then maybe there are better options for file storage out there. Backpack isn’t really built to be a place to store all your files. It’s a place to store some of your files, the files you need to hand right now.

Further, please remember that Backpack isn’t all things to all people, nor is it a do anything do everything application. You’re asking about adding recurring reminders and birthdays to Backpack. Backpack probably isn’t a place to store birthdays. You can if you wish, but it’s not really built for that – that’s what a calendar is for. The calendar isn’t for “Return the DVD tomorrow so I don’t get hit with a late fee” but that’s what Backpack reminders are for.

I know processing power, not storage space is the issue, but what if the free accounts were “bring-your-own-FTP”, like Basecamp. That would eliminate the storage requirements, at the very least. You could cap it at like 100MB just to keep people from abusing it and reduce the processing power.

One thing I thought of is to use Backpack as a travel companion. I travel to Thailand every year and I never bring my computer with with me because I just don’t want the hassle. I usually bring a Moleskine and drop in on internet cafes when I find them to keep up on my email and my site. Backpack would be a great tool to store trip information, notes, numbers, flight info and links etc.
As for the numbered email-to naming scheme I don’t see it as a problem like a few others have noted. If you add the address to your address book you can name it whatever you want. For remote mailing you can do the same for your webmail/gmail accounts. When do you ever mail something from a 100% anonymous email account?

Anyway, thumbs up to the 37 crew.

Sort of “Here’s a place to store all the little files and images that you have, and here’s another way to access larger files you have stored somewhere else”?

On second pass, it’s a lot more useful than I originally planned. I believe my initial dissapointment stemmed from some of the ill-placed hype and the tagline presented. I don’t think it ties up lose ends of my life. For that, I imagine too much of a “Getting Things Done” system than Backpack is. I kind of invisioned it replacing my moleskin in a matter of ways - but it’s not intended (nor can it handle) that.

What it is great for is miniature project management. I’m using my three pages right now for three randomish things:

1. Resume / CV - Since I’m kind of a professional of two trades, it’s been difficult for me to culmulate my entire resume somewhere. The notes feature lets me put all my work experience down and when I sit down to send out resumes, I can pick and chose. It also makes it easy to add notes of interest, and in general keep all of my work experience in one spot.

2. Article ideas. Now, this is what I really like. I can put down each article as a “notes” and a to-do list item. So when I write and publish the articles, I can check it off - while keeping images, files, links, etc in the notes section. Very useful here.

3. A kind of notepad for a redesign of my personal website. Some place to throw down all my ideas for later organization.

I’d still like to see a few features here and there. For example: Instead of lumping notes/lists into one place, I’d like to create multiple “list” sections in one page. Or multiple, notes, etc. And, the always file storage / email names thing that I really think is a big bummer. Jason, I noticed you mentioned ads for the free plan - it seems like they would pay for offering even something like 2MB of free space to free visitors. Get people hooked on uploading files so they’ll upgrade :)

Anyways, I do believe I’ll continue using it. We’ll just have to see how useful it becomes :)

For example, when you add a link on your homepage, if it is too long it starts messing up the new page and the whole layout.

Also, if the homepage title is too long it takes up a lot of space. There should be a way to give a user control over the font size and color.

Also, maybe something to add down the road. Why not offer posting files hosted remotely, just like Blogger. You upload your files to your space and all you do is just link to them from your blog.

Also, Example page is always on the way, is there way to move it to the bottom of the list of my pages?

One more thing, it will be helpful to have the Reminders archived. If some of the reminders gets pushed back in date, it is already gone from my Reminders section and I have to re-enter it all of them again. Also, displaying a calendar for current month or next 3 months might be a useful feature to have…

I like this tool a lot…these are just some of my suggestions. Thanks!

I just wish there was a way to integrate the lists and reminders into iCal, since it does bother me a bit that I’ve got information spread out in various places, from my computer to my PDA to the web. I know the purpose of Backpack is to bring everything together into one place, but it almost seems like it’s just spreading the information out more.

Still, it’s definitely a useful web app, and I can’t wait to see what features are added over time.
