Creative Commons Contest

April 19, 2005 | Comments 31 Comments

Ready for another contest in which you can win a free iPod Shuffle and a Flickr Pro account?

I know, it’s all the rage, but I’ve actually been wanting to do this for a few weeks now and well, I need some help. As you probably (don’t) know I’ve been pretty interested in Podcasting of late and I’d like to try my hand at it myself.

Thing is, I need some legal music, that I like to share and it’s been a struggle find it. Creative Commons is a great idea, but finding good artists under a CC license is difficult. This is something I hope to change, as soon as I can find some music worth promoting.

I’m hoping you can help me out.

Recommend me some good Creative Commons licensed music

I’ve been listening to Matt’s show and a few others. Via those I’ve found a few tracks I like, but to be honest it seems like Creative Common’s licensed music (and/or the shows that promote them) is very electronic heavy—which makes sense, I guess. Thing is, I’m not really into that.

What I’m hoping is that some of my readers might point me in the direction of some good CC music that I can use for my virgin podcast. I’m desperate here. So desperate I’m going to give an iPod Shuffle and a Flickr Pro account the the person who suggests the song I like the most.

I know, it’s totally subjective and I’m not going to give you any help by describing what I like other than to say I’m willing to listen to just about anything and my tastes pretty much fall all over the place. I don’t want to influence any recommendations that come my way.

In any event it’s an easy enough contest and if nothing else you’ll be helping to promote an artist you hopefully really like. I do that all the time and I love it!

The rules

  1. Comment here or send me an e-mail (keith [at] dkeithrobinson [dot] com) with a link to some music I can listen to.
  2. The music must be licensed in such a way that I can share it via podcast.
  3. Make sure and tell me the artist and song, etc. and why you like it. Feel free to include as much info as you want.
  4. Be sure and tell me your name, & how I can reach you. If you include your e-mail on the comment I’ll get it.
  5. If two people recommend the same thing, the person who did so first takes precedence.
  6. You can recommend as much as you like.
  7. The deadline is May 1st.
  8. Spread the word, the more music I can listen to the better.
  9. The goal of this is to help share good music. Remember that.

This is more an idea than a recommendation…

Try going to CDBaby.com, finding an artist you like, and then e-mail them. Ask whether they currently have CC licensed music, and if they don’t ask if they’d be interested in applying a CC license to some of their work.

While I have not done this, I did buy an album from a band called Sam, and was (delightfully) surprised when one of the members of the band e-mailed me a few days later to thank me and ask how I had heard of them. (They even gave me some unreleased tracks!)

I can’t speak for all the bands, but it’s obvious that some are very interested in what their fans think, and are eager to get spread their music around.

Just a thought. :)

Chris Randall of Sister Machine Gun has a label called Positron Records that has some works released under the CC - http://www.positronrecords.com/cc/index.php

My favorite of the lot is probably Micronaut - Invention 1 / Microprocessor (which is also available as a free download from the same site http://www.positronrecords.com/releases/release.php?id=posi017)

Can we reccomend some just free music? I enjoy the archive more than is probably healthy for anyone.

That music is 100% legit & free… no “liscences” to deal with, and some amazing quality stuff in there.

Some recommendations:

John Butler Trio, November 20, 2004
O.A.R., 10-08-02 (This is one of my favorite live show recordings of any band, ever)

So much free music there… more than you could ever listen to in fact. Oh, and it’s 100% free to distribute as you will, as long as you’re not selling it (you can sell the medium it’s being produced through… for example, shipping & CD costs when mailing a CD to someone)

How about Scott and Shannon’s songs from Blogathon 2003? CC licensed, and the license even resulted in some recombination, with Eric Ostrom’s version the next day.

And the host for the MP3s has way too much bandwidth, and would be happy to see them get a few more hours of fame.

Oh, and Scott’s got another dozen or so of his own songs, also CC licensed and explicitly podcast-friendly.

The Wired CD of course! Got some good stuff on there, and a fun beastie boys song.

Cheers!

Not CC licenced, but offered free with no disclaimers, 12 albums of Brazillian hip hop. I think it’s fine to treat this work as if it had a “Non-Commercial/Attribution/Share-Alike” CC Licence, as they are clearly looking for exposure.

Also check out UK indie label The Thin Man, currently offering free mp3s for each of their artists. I can vouch that these are CC licenced, I developed the website, but haven’t got around to adding the licences! Based on some of your Song of the Week selections, I think you might enjoy Milk and Beef’s free track Cuckoo, which is some dark alt hip hop.

Enjoy.

Looking at unsigned bands rather than CC licensed but Electromancer has loads of tracks, and a wide variety of stuff. I’m sure most artists would agree to something, if you liked the music. Guy who runs it seems to have his head screwed on too.

Hey Keith…

I really didn’t have the time to do searches for specific music, but here are some resources for finding creative commons licensed music:

http://commoncontent.org/catalog/audio/music/
and
http://www.magnatune.com/
and perhaps more information at slashdot

Hi,

I got a page on my blog with reggae, hiphop and various styles tunes under CC licence :

I won’t tell why I like this music as it is my own production, so judge by yourself ;)

Coincidentally, there’s a Slashdot posting about just this kinda thing today: Ian Clarke (of Freenet) has created Indy — a new open source, P2P program that relies on collaborative filtering to recommend new music.

you might want to contact the guys at http://www.epitonic.com … they say that you cant distribute the music, but you can tell someone to go to the site and download it for themselves… which you could link to thier servers in your podcast… so in fact the user is downloading for themselves…

might be worth a try… they have some great stuff there.

I recommend Josh Woodward. He writes mostly acoustic music, sometimes with a humorous bent. Favorites of mine include “Bonjour, Mon Amie,” “Home Improvement,” “The Spirit World,” and “Soft Orange Glow.”

His sharing policy doesn’t explicitly mention it, but should allow podcasting.

Well I got one for ya, though it’s only a few songs, for now. My band, Ambershed, has started releasing our Demo albums as Creative Commons. So head on over to Ambershed.com and download the 3 tracks in various formats, it’s on the Discography page. Hopefully we’ll be finishing another demo by the end of the summer which will also be accompanied by a Creative Commons License.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks.

Hi there. Here’s a couple tracks my friend wrote and released under a Creative Commons Music Sharing License.

http://mnconrad.com/01_BlueLight.mp3
http://mnconrad.com/05_Untitled.mp3

First one’s got a great melody and some nice home studio production. Second one is more electronic… very laid back. I like ‘em both.

I’d like to recommend the following:

As for the why, why do any of us like the music we like? Music is a very personal thing; one person’s beloved song is another person’s noise.

I, personally, like the songs listed because they all have a certain energy, a certain momentum. They all have feeling.

They also have a CC licence attached to them which should meet your requirements. I would also like to point you to Magnatune, a great place to find music. All of the music there is licensed under the same license linked to above.

Enjoy.

Have you checked out demoscene?
The tracks there are not CC-licenced but I there normally are no copyright on the songs.
You can have a look at it on Nectarine. This is an internet radio using demoscene songs.
Downside is, that most of it is quite electronic.
But you may like some things of Virgill (i.e. Cradle of love).
There are some good mixes already, hope this gives you a feeling that this music is really for free use.. :-)
I did some music myself but I doubt you’d like it as it is quite electronic..

I’m surprised only one person recommended 15megsoffame.com – I guess it’s not as popular as skinnycorp’s other offerings. (might be the ridiculously slow server?)

But, as far as good music goes, they’ve got some:

* LEVY - Rotten Love – Great melody, nice driving beat and a hook that will grab you. Couldn’t ask for anything more from your free music.

* Canasta - Slow Down Chicago – Cool bassline from the piano and another great refrain. They even throw in some violins and trombones for good measure ( pun intended :)

* roboppy - Stephani Wanted to See Radiohead – This one’s electronic/guitary and a little weaker as far as sound quality goes. But, regardless, the song itself is strong and, hey, it’s about Radiohead.

* Comrade - Electric Eddie’s Machine – A lot more downbeat than the others but I love how the singer kind of rolls her words into each other. Very nice.

* Max Avery Lichtenstein - Tarnation: End Credits – And last but certainly not least, this song is absolutely beautiful. It’s my kind of music. Moody, acoustic, melodic. Nothing better to listen to while writing or reading. Oh, and of course, the dude’s name is badass :)

John Holowach at Narphonax.com. He’s a samplist, a remix artist–some of his material is electronic, but not all. You’ll just have to listen.

He’s also in a band called Tryad.

Great move to get some nice music ;)

My suggestion…

Steve Coleman, master of the M-base releases a lot of free music. You can get mp3’s at http://www.m-base.org/sounds.html.

To get you started…
Freestyle
Night Breed
Black Genghis

Fasten your seatbelt for some funky jazzy hippedy hoppedy music. Enjoy!

Could be difficult to understand because the site is in Italian, but you can find great free music at ANOMOLO (http://anomolo.mediashape.it), IMHO the best free indie label. Their claim is “Don’t pay for this music” so you can be sure that it’s perfectly legal to use the songs you’ll find there, and they let you download also the printable covers in PDF format.
I really love their work (I assure you I’m not involved) and I’ve already d/l all their catalogue.
Just to try, you can begin downloading their very first compilation (4CD): “Happy xmas (war is on)”.
Have fun (and let me win) :)

Greetings Keith…

I hope this recommendation pleases you :)

I’m a big fan of Sander Kleinenberg. A well established international DJ, Sander has been at the head of many great parties. He’s also created a number of original tracks and a few hot remixes too.

This is where it gets pretty. He’s done a mix of JustinTimberlakes tune ‘Rock your body’. Fortunately, Sander’s remix doesn’t sound too much like the original! :)
Instead he’s created a beautifully mesmerizing tune that has been at the top of my list for a long time.

I think you’ll dig this one.

You can download it here

Merry listening

Phil mentioned my synth-heavy cover of Scott and Shannon’s “Southdown”, but I’ve also got a bunch of original songs under a CC license. Podcasting should be okay.

I’m basically a folk singer but “Everything You Read” is up-tempo electric mandolin pop, “One and the Same” is a little bit country, and “I Am Tempted” has a slight African influence, by way of Talking Heads.
