The Difficulty with Originality

As many of you might have guessed, the little “spat” between Garrett and myself was staged. It was done to have a little fun with what I’m going to call, for the purposes of this post, “The Difficulty with Originality.”

First off, I want to apologize to anyone we really fooled. We knew it wasn’t April fools day, but why limit the fun to one day a year? And to be honest we didn’t think people would take it that seriously. We figured the over-the-top harshness of Garrett’s post coupled with my light ribbing would be enough. Our bad! Well, actually it was Garrett’s idea, so if your funny-bone is mad, blame him!

But there is a point to all this silliness. I hope.

We really wanted to have some fun with a topic that we see as important, but kind of touchy. It’s hard when people take your hard work and compare it to someone else’s work. It’s happened to all of us, and this whole shenanigan was pulled to help show that it’s really not as big a deal as we sometimes make it out to be.

If nothing else it caused some entertaining and informative discussion that I’d like to follow up on.

Inspiration is everywhere, it’s ok to draw on it

We both launched sites in the last week or so. We both put plenty of effort into our sites and did our best to meet the goals we laid out for them. Frankly, I think we both did a pretty good job and for the most part, the designs were very well received. However, it was pointed out a few times that our sites bore no small resemblance to other sites. In my case this was expected, and I’d guess Garrett wasn’t all that surprised either.

It’s next to impossible to have a completely original idea on the Web and when you’ve got a knowledgeable and engaged audience (a very good thing to have) they’ll be able to tell where you draw your inspirations. This, in my opinion, isn’t a big deal at all.

I realize we made it out like having people compare our work to others was a bad thing, but I don’t think it is at all—especially when it’s being compared to great work!

The Web is a tough medium

When I began my redesign I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do. I then went on a search for inspiration, looking for other sites that did some of the things I wanted to do. I found them in spades. In fact, I think I found at least a few sites that reflected each aspect of what I was looking for.

So I turned to print, and found it almost as “samey”. No help there. So I took what I had and ran with it.

From that point it was all me, or so I thought. See—I surf sites and I analyze design. I can’t help but be influenced by what I see. I do my best to be original, but it’s difficult. Frustrating even. So what do you do?

Good can be better than original

How many of you love Flickr? I know I do. They had an original idea and executed it very well. When it came to that execution and the design of their site, did they do anything amazingly original? I don’t think so. They took a whole bunch of great ideas already out there, put their own spin on them, and they came out great.

It’s funny because the people I know who design all the time understand this. “Great designers steal” and all that. It’s just now, with the Web and the access to inspiration being so easy, it’s even harder to come up with an original design. As well, your original design might not actually work as well as something proven and not-so-original.

The 2-column blog layout comes to mind. It works well.

Be original in other ways

Design is very important, but for many of us, especially when it comes to client work, the goal isn’t to have “a kick ass original design.” This is something that always bugged me about all-Flash sites (which by the way tend to all look the same (even in their differences) to me) and their lack of regard for “real” goals. By that I mean, if the goal is to showcase the designer’s Flash skills, great—go that route—if not, you might want to consider another option.

There are many ways to differentiate that have nothing to do with design. If you’ve got a blog, do something different with your content. Post original photos. Have a weekly rant or something…stage an argument, you get the jist. ;)

(For real though, now I know what gets people involved, reading and commenting—controversy!)

Use your imagination, there are all kinds of opportunities there.

With this site I knew I could do some things that made it my own. Sure some of the ideas are old hat but I can take a new spin on them. Take my navigation. That idea and the “look” has been around for quite awhile and honestly how original should one get with navigation? I wanted something big, bold, plain and at the top of all my pages — there isn’t a whole lot you can do with that and keep it useful.

I wanted to find other ways to set the site apart. The photo, the content, etc. I think I’ve done that. I took most of my “original” ideas from myself. That doesn’t make them any more original.

However, taken as a whole I find my site rather unique and that is just fine with me.

It’s ok to be inspired. It’s ok to borrow.

Garrett’s site was compared quite a bit to Signal vs. Noise, which in turn was compared to Mike Rundle’s site. You know what? While I see the similarities there, none of these sites is the same to me and their all very nicely designed in my mind. I consider all of them to be very good designers that probably influence each other a bit.

Cameron Moll wrote a post awhile back, Nodes of Design Inspiration. This is something I think every designer should read. It’s very insightful and helps understand what it is to be a designer in this medium. Hell, in any medium — I see more originality in your average 2 column blog than I do in many magazines!

At the end of the day, if you produce something that is truly original, in that you’re the first and only person to ever have done it, I’ll produce a flying purple unicorn. But seriously, if you can achieve that level of originality and it’s done well, be prepared to have bits of it begin to appear in other’s work. It’s the nature of design and should be acknowledged, accepted and embraced.

There is nothing wrong with being influenced by and borrowing from the great ideas of others. We all do it, even if we sometimes don’t know it.

That title of Garrett’s post was (as you said) too over the top. Looking at it now, it’s laughable.

In all seriousness though, this has been a great way to prove that to design is to be inspired - where you get your inspiration from is up to you. Just don’t outright copy line for line, color for color. That’s silly and it’s not designing, it’s tracing (any Chasing Amy fans out there? yeah, me neither).

Many times when working on a design I come to realise that many of them do look alike, simply because they work so well for what they need to do. Personally, I prefer a good design over originality as well.

I enjoyed reading the comments over at Garret’s and found most of them laughable. Although, Garret’s post seemed a little too fishy.

As for originality, I find it difficult to be original in any medium. It’s rare that an idea turns out to be an “original” one (as in Flickr’s case). Usually when an idea comes up, chances are ten other people are thinking, have done, or will do the same thing as you.

On one hand, I do agree with Jeremy’s observation that “a lot of designers are simply making decisions based on what everybody else is doing”. If that is the case, we are treading on dangerous ground. However, if we are trying to achieve a certain level of design, we must know what has been done in order to know how to make it better. In school, if you want to study art you can’t just take studio classes. You’ve got to get at least X number of semester in art history under your belt as well.

I feel like I’m rambling a bit here, but the point is that we can’t be good designers by just checking out css vault every day…and we can’t expect to create revolutionary or original work without a knowledge of website design history.

This conversation would have been just as valuable (or moreso) without the phoniness.

I don’t think that is “stealing” their work, but borrowing ideas. Fine line. Its impossible to be unique. Even if you have been locked in a closet all your life, come out and design something, its going to look like some persons work.
