What’s the deal with Tegan & Sara all the sudden? In the last few weeks I’ve been asked about them several times. They’ve been around for a bit, they’re on their third album now, and I wish I could have featured them when I first got So Jealous back in November 2004 or so, as it’s a really, really great album.
I figured they’d have gotten a bit more attention for this one early on, but it seems like people are just now noticing. I’ve been hearing them more and seeing more press on them than ever before. It’s kind of strange for a band with an album 6 months old now.
Maybe it’s that they’re touring with The Killers, or maybe it’s their recent exclusivity on iTunes (iTunes link), but they’re finally getting some well deserved interest. Which is great. So Jealous is jam-packed with great songs and it was one of my favorites of last year and is still in pretty heavy rotation.
I think I first heard Tegan & Sara on KEXP doing an in-studio. It was quite awhile ago, but I remembered be intrigued by their vocal harmony and unique lilting style. Some might call it awkward, but I really like it.
Then, awhile later I heard “Walking With A Ghost” and was instantly hooked. It reminds me a bit of Fleetwood Mac for some reason, maybe she they were mixed with a 4AD artist, like Lush. Anyway, that song stuck with me for a LONG time after I heard it. It’s the one song of theirs that’s gathered some mainstream interest, and while the rest of the tacks might not be as accessible, they’re all really good.
There is some good variety on So Jealous as they swing back and forth between ethereal mood rock to very catchy rock; sometimes almost punk and sometimes almost ambient. A nice mix, well worth checking out if you’ve not already.
I expect big things in the future from Tegan & Sara, and I doubt they’ll go overlooked for long.

Wow, Tegan and Sarah are starting to get noticed in the US? Good for them!
I must say though, although I enjoy all of their work, for me 2000’s “This Business of Art” is the highlight of their career so far.
If you get a chance to see them live take the time to check them out, they’ve got a great synergy on stage and the time in between songs is just as enjoyable as the songs themselves.

I have been a fan since around 2001, and I think that they are getting some major exposure for a few reasons:
Killers tour
Itunes
Featured EVERY week on ABC’s new hit, “Grey’s Anatomy”. Which seems to be a hipper/younger ER.
And they are very good live.

Hmm… like the melody, like the music… not a fan of the voice. It’s slightly too nasal for my tastes. A good recommendation, though! I enjoy these. Thanks!
