Whether you like your hip-hop mainstream or underground, artsy or hard hitting, you’ll find something you like and probably much more on Black Dialogue by The Perceptionists.

The Perceptionists are one of those killer rap supa groups. This time made up of MC’s Mr. Lif, Akrobatik and DJ Fakts One with guest appearances by Guru, Phonte, El-P and Humpty himself, Shock G.

I was familair with Lif’s work, from the amazing I Phantom and he leads the way here, but I’ve got to say I was very impressed, on first listen, with Akrobatik and Fakts One as well. Black Dialogue is the real deal.

It all kicks off with this week’s cut, the heavy and deep groove of “Let’s Move” where, for those of you who don’t know, you’ll be introduced to the amazing flow of Lif and some of the craziest beats around. My jaw dropped almost as fast as my ass.

The rest of the album keeps it going, Lif leading the way with Akrobatik and Fakts One keeping pace the whole way. “Memorial Day” is the accessible single with a message and a great track. “Party Hard” does exactly that and “5 O’Clock” is the slow jam, with a chilled out feel that reminds me of some old Pharcyde cuts. Then there’s “Career Finders” which harkens strongly back to D.U. albums like Sex Packets.

There’s a something in there for every hip-hop head and if you’re a fan at all of urban music or hip-hop, you’ll love Black Dialogue. One of the best albums of the year. In any genre.

Shock G is on the record? I’m so getting it. I miss Digital Underground so much, man. That was some funky stuff.

I have to say I like your taste in hiphop more than your taste in punkrock! (mainly because of the NewFoundGlory article a while back you wrote (at least I think it’s NFG, or something)) :)

Really a great listen, have you maybe gave Sage Francis or Sole a spin? I highly recomend it.
From Sage - “Personal Journals” and from Sole - “Man’s Best Friend”.

Cheers, good writing as always.

This cd is one of the best of 2005 no doubt, true hip hop without the bling bling and flashy beats, just pure mind twisting , provocative lyrics that leave you shook…….big up’s to Mr. Lif!
