HBO's Deadwood

I just got through watching the second season finale of HBO’s Deadwood. Simply put, I think this is the best show on television right now—hands down. For those of you who might not know about Deadwood, it’s period piece set in the late 1800’s in a very real American frontier town.

The characters are based on real world people who lived in Deadwood and many of the events portrayed are based on true events as well. The acting is the best you’ll find on television, lead by an amazing Ian McShane as the foul mouthed town boss Al Swearengen.

Deadwood is compelling, entertaining, educational, at times funny and often brutal. It’s a peek into a slice of American history that makes you think while it’s taking you on a ride like no other on television. Very, very highly recommended.

Deadwood is simply the very best western and written series I have seen in decades. I am a fan of “Have Gun-Will Travel” 1957/8- 1963/4 with Richard Boone, as well as, character portrayals in “Gunsmoke” throughout its duration; however, “Deadwood” is set to be a classic series. The dialogue is superb and is riveting in conciseness and impact. The direct and subtle humor is a source of constant amusement, forcefulness, and focused power. Casting is wonderful! Sets are so realistic, I feel like I live there in every episode and cannot wait until going back home in the next one. “Sopranos” is terrific, but “Deadwood” transports you back in time and place. I hope this series continues for years. I purchased the first season DVDs and have watched both seasons episodes as often as available. Two thumbs and two big toes UP for this wonderful series and a “Thank you” to HBO and David Milch for blessing us with such great writing and commitment. A truckload of Emmys to all participants!!
