The Artist: Maximo Park
The Song: Apply Some Pressure
[Launch Player]
The Album: A Certain Trigger
Released 2005
Recommended if you like: Bloc Party, Futureheads, Kaiser Chiefs, Gang Of Four, Ultravox
I was hooked when I first heard “Going Missing” on KEXP. My immediate thought was, “wow another really good Neo-Post-Punk song!” You know I love Bloc Party, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand, etc. and I think there is still room for more quality bands in that same vein.
And while there are obvious similarity to bands like the aforementioned Bloc Party and post-punkers Gang of Four and XTC, there are also some highly original tracks on A Certain Trigger and quite a bit of their stuff reminds me more of bands like Ultravox and Roxy Music than it does XTC.
Heck a few tricks scream “Chris and Cosey” to me. “Acrobat” comes to mind. How’s that for breaking the mold?
When it comes down to it, Maximo Park is a bit different. And honestly—they’re also better.
A Certain Trigger is a great, high-energy listen with lots of variety and just enough uniqueness to set it apart. Sure, if you like Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party and the rest, you’ll probably love Maximo Park — but they’ve got a little something those other bands don’t have.
I’m not sure what it is, but my first listen through A Certain Trigger was much like my first listen to Futureheads whose debut is one of my favorites of the last few years and will probably be in high rotation for a long time to come.
Maybe it’s the variety. Maybe it’s Paul Smith’s unfiltered accent. Maybe it’s the unpolished feel. Maybe the fact that there is absolutely no filler on the album. I don’t know—but I like it. A lot.
So, check it out. This week’s song “Apply Some Pressure” is one of the coolest songs I’ve heard in quite awhile. My guess is these guys will be around for a long time to come. And definitely place A Certain Trigger in your “must haves” for 2005.

Nice choice Keith. I’m pretty keen on these guys as well… and you’re spot on with the Ultravox and Roxy Music comparisons.

One word: wow. Thanks Keith, for the review and recommendation. I picked up A Certain Trigger and was not disappointed. Sad part, I couldn’t find it anywhere locally, and ended up buying from iTunes.
