Desert Island Music

September 17, 2005 | Comments 42 Comments

My buddy Eric asked me tonight:

“If you were on a desert island and you could only listen to five bands for the rest of your life, who would they be?”

My answer:

  • Tool
  • Sisters of Mercy
  • Ted Leo + Pharmacists
  • Outkast
  • Weezer

Try it. It’s really hard. I’m still second guessing myself.

OK…I already want to make a switch. Can I get The Jam in there? Maybe Beautiful South? Badly Drawn Boy? Metallica? Skinny Puppy? Aesop Rock? Rush?

Eric says no. Damn. Five is no where near enough!

I’d go for:

David Bowie
The Beatles
British Sea Power
The Divine Comedy
The White Stripes

Though I accept that technically David Bowie is not a band.

Tool is definitely on my list as well, along with: Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Static-X, Fear Factory, and since I’m Canadian, I have to throw in some Trews (whom I highly recommend everyone check out).

This was a tough one, but i’ll have to go with:

Converge
Entombed
Napalm Death
Pantera
Sepultura

If I could have a couple alternates for some variety, it would have to be NOFX and At The Drive-in

Oooh, excellent diversion from current CSS hell. Here goes…

The Stone Roses
New Order
Jeff Buckley
Sigur Ros
Super Furry Animals

That desert island sounds good. Can I go?

It would have to be:

The Pixies
16 Horsepower
The National
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Giant Sand

In an ideal world the Cure and the Smiths would form one giant supergroup with Giant Sand to take the fifth slot.

Oh man – Pixies!?! Damn. Forgot about them. New Order? Shit. Radiohead? One of the best live shows ever. Then there is Ministry, Zeppelin, Style Council, Decedents, PIL, Futureheads… oh Stephen mentioned Clannad, I love them…Please don’t ever make me go to a deserted island and only be able to listen to 5 bands! Tom. Helmet? I saw them at SXSW this year. Awesome.

Actually, perhaps we’re all looking at this the wrong way - perhaps somebody should volunteer to be stranded on a desert island with, say, Keane, U2, Coldplay, Snow Patrol and Rod Stewart, thus saving the rest of us from ever having to listen to them again.

All I’d need would be: The Black Mages, BeForU, and Nobou Uematsu.

I don’t expect anybody to know who they are. But if you do, I love you in advance.

The Blood Brothers
The (International) Noise Conspiracy
Tool
The Rolling Stones
The Refused

And that is only if I can have every song by all of those bands on one of those new iPod nano’s.

It would have to be (today at least)

New Order
Neil Young
Kraftwerk
Johnny Cash
Bjork

Is it cheating, knowing that an artist has a large back catalogue?

Picking 5 artists is really very easy in comparison to picking one artist, or worse yet, one album.

Keith, I remember some entry of yours in the past when you stated (admitted, stated) that if you were stranded on a desert isle, Aenima would be the album you’d choose.

Naturally, you’d want to pick artists with a good volume of music. Right after I submitted, I saw that someone had chosen Zeppelin, and kicked myself. Although I don’t know who they’d replace…

I’m not sure I can come up with 5, but at the top of the list is:

  • King’s X

  • as well as the solo and side projects the guys are involved in. OK, so that’s probably cheating a bit. If I have to come up with 4 more, today I’d go with:
  • Toad the Wet Sprocket (and Glen Phillips solo – there I go again!)
  • Pink Floyd
  • Led Zeppelin
  • maybe Neal Morse (and his former band Spock’s Beard, as well as his side project Transatlantic)

    • Iron Maiden
    • Pantera - never got to see them live, and sadly will never get the chance of seeing one of the greatest ever metal guitarists
    • Children of Bodom
    • Cathedral
    • Nightwish

I could probably write this list tomorrow and it would be different except for Iron Maiden (the best band ever!)

I was tempted to include DragonForce (who I will be seeing tonight!), but they haven’t really got enough material to qualify. It’s only a matter of time though.

Other contenders would be Megadeth, pre-Metallica Metallica, Dimmu Borgir, Morbid Angel, Slayer and of course Belinda Carlisle (seriously).

I’m surprised that Tool are on so many people’s list. I saw them once and they were the most boring live band I have ever seen.

    Elliott Smith

    Oh good question.

    • Elliott Smith (just discovered him)
    • Kyuss/Queens of the Stone Age/Desert Sessions (they count as one surely :-D )
    • Aphex Twin
    • Sleater-Kinney
    • Biffy Clyro

I’ve left out Arcade Fire and Dresden Dolls because they don’t have enough albums.
