Coheed and Cambria, Dredg and The Blood Brothers

October 13, 2005 | Comments 21 Comments

Last night I saw one of the best shows I’ve seen ever.

Coheed and Cambria, The Blood Brothers, Dredg and mewithoutyou at The Showbox here in Seattle. It was a truly classic rock show. Classic. Those of you who’ve talked to me offline might know I’m kind of a rocker at heart and I’ve been crowin’ about Coheed and Cambria for along time now. They’re the best rock band since Tool IMHO and they keep getting better. They’ve tended to go away from their “emo-ish” stuff (which is still good) into more deep, classic, guitar rock and they do it the best way possible live. Emotional, loud as hell, lots of audience participation, no bullshit…

I’d seen them before at SXSW and wasn’t that impressed. But then again, Claudio was losing his voice and the venue wasn’t that great, so I was looking forward to seeing them redeem themselves to my ears.

They did that. And exceed every possible expectation. It was…spine-tinglingly awesome. I wish I could explain it better, but they’re just something you’ve got to see for yourself. The Blood Brothers and Dredg we’re also very, very good. I’ve seen The Blood Brothers before so I knew what to expect, but as a relatively new fan of Dredg I was really, really impressed with their set. They’ve got kind of a Depeche Mode/Mission UK/My Chemical Romance thing going on which I really like.

Anyway, the show was awesome. Easily one of the top 2 or 3 I’ve seen in the last few years, and I’ve seen some good’ns.

If you can catch this tour in a smaller venue like that, you should do it. I can guarantee Coheed and Cambria are destined for arena rock in the near future.

I just saw that show about 2 weeks ago here in Detroit. For some reason I thought Dredg was similar to Godsmack or 3 Doors Down or something along those lines (Poppy Hard Rock), but I was very impressed. Reminde me of Sparta a lot, too.

Great show. I almost bit my tongue off in the pit. I’m getting too old for those things. ;)

Not to try and give my friends any undue noticability, but you might want to check out Stereotactic (.com, MySpace). They’re a really good band, and have a tendency to fuse classic rock with emo-core. They just released their first LP, and after listening to them for years, it’s the best they’ve come out with.

Brandon – Yeah, I stayed in the back sipping on a Red Stripe. The Showbox is nice because it’s all ages with a bar if you’re over 21. The bar is usually pretty mellow and it’s set high enough that you’ve got a great view without all the sweating.

Yeah, Coheed rocks. I’d love to see them live. I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about this tour, and I think that now that I’ve read this I’m going to catch them in Houston (it’s the closest they’re coming to me.)

They played here in Portland on Monday and I couldn’t make it. Now I’m pissed. And to top it off, we saw Bob Mould last night at the Doug Fir, and I was largely unimpressed.

What did you think of mewithoutYou? They’re by far my favourite band over the last couple years, but I know they aren’t the sort of thing everybody likes.

Keith, why didn’t I know that mewithoutyou were playing. I would’ve gone with you had I known. I would’ve just left before C and C. They suck. Ha Ha. Just kidding, I know how that upsets you.

C+C we’re on 7th Avenue Drop/FUSE last night! Saw your post earlier in the day and wondered if you saw it.

Off topic, congrats on Blue Flavor!

jordan – mewithoutYou was really good. The sound wasn’t that great, and we didn’t catch all of it. We tried to get there early as we could, but they started right on time…

SZA – I bet you would have liked the whole thing. C and C were much better than the time we saw them in Austin and I think you’d have liked Dredg ok to. Not really your style but they were good.

oneeighturbo – Missed that. Damn.

Damn! I gave away my tickets to them in Salt Lake about a week ago. I had just seen Death Cab the night before and was a little “concerted” out. I’ll make them a priority next time they come though.

I saw C+C when they came to Vancouver during their tour. I had a good time, but I felt the live show was a little uninspired. It may have had to do with the venue—a theatre with row seating—although, both opening acts were quite entertaining….

I don’t know, maybe they were tired that night.

That should say “their last tour”.

I think it’s time for another coffee…

I’ll be seeing Coheed for the second (or third, I can’t remember) time at the 9:30 Club here in DC next month and can’t wait! With the way Claudio sings, it’s tricky to pull it off live at the best of times, but I’ll forgive him since he’s playing some sick riffs at the same time…

By the sounds of it you might be interested in an aussie band called ‘Cog’. Fromwhat i can tell of your taste in music i think you’d quite enjoy them.

I’ll definately be giving Coheed and Cambria a good listen when i have the chance, they sound quite promising :)

dude, first of all, coheed and cambia is gettin worse; not better. blood brothers are annoyingly medicore, if anything at all.. fun. Dredg are good. the only innovative band out of the bands mentioned, and to compare them to my chemical romance is disgusting.

I’m 40 yrs old & I took my girl friend & younger bro to,who turned me on to Coheed & Cambria,to the Electric Factory in Philadelphia on Nov 14th. I’ve been to a ton of concerts before..I just gotta say that it was one of the best shows I’ve seen in a long time. All of the bands had that raw energy but were tight(in a way I haven’t heard in years)..in fact I just bought the Dredg CD today..you should go check out these bands before the get to big to see at small venues up close., Later, JK
