So I booked my trip to SXSW today. This year I’m staying at the Hampton Downtown Austin and I’m staying an extra day. (You hear that Judson? It’s so I can hit up your closing BBQ, so you’d better have it again!) I’ll be in Austin for a solid 10 days of geekin’ out, good conversation, good people, good food, good vodka and good music.
We’re going to be puttin’ on our “Design Eye” show again this year and who knows what Andrei will make us do this time. Last year he had us dancing in the aisles to some of the worst music you’ve ever heard. There are also even more interesting sounding events than last year, and I’ve been hearing rumors of some great parties too.
The highlight, for me though, is getting to see my brother and I’m hoping we’ll be able to hang a bit more this time. Ah, yeah, good times to be had all around. If you can make it down, you should. It’s well worth it. Oh, and stay for the music! It’s quite a different experience than the interactive. Lots of fun.
Don’t believe me? Here’s the photos:

No doubt it will be fun, looking forward to meeting all the folks whom I bug all the time in their blogs.
I bought my interactive ticket a month or so ago, but decided not to buy tickets for film and music. With all the interactive stuff going on, I think it will be difficult to cram enough music in on top of it to justify the $300 price tag. We’ll be able to buy tickets at the door for most shows anyway, right?
Oh yeah, I’m stoked because I’m moving to Austin in two weeks and will be living somewhat near where all the interactive stuff goes on.

I’ll be there! I missed the Design Eye panel last time (since, like all the others, it was scheduled simultaneously with five other great panels) but I won’t miss it this time.

I’ll be there. I was thinking of staying at the Hampton too. Quite a bit cheaper than the Hilton, no?

I’ll be there, and I’ll also be in the Hampton. Party at the Hampton!

I’m still undecided, but the Hampton is definitely the place to stay!

I’ve not stayed at the Hampton, but I hear it’s nice and the location is kick ass. Since I’m there the whole week, I need something within easy stumbling distance. ;0) Oh, and yeah, it’s cheaper than the Hilton.

As I said just a couple comments ago, I’m thinkin of staing at the Hampton too, but the company that’s funding me is a non-profit org. Any ideas on how to get a cheaper rate, buddying up w/ someone. (Separate beds please!), etc.

Who’s that drunk buffoon in every single picture from 2004?
Oh yeah. Me.

Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll make it – too far from Oz. :( At least I made it to WE05!
I do have a request though: Design Eye for the Markup Guy — Tantek Çelik!
Please? He has some great ideas, but his blog is almost unreadable due to the design and layout.

2006 will be my first time at SXSW. I’m only registered for the interactive conference, so I’m trying to figure out when the best times to arrive and leave will be. I see that opening remarks are on the Saturday the 11th, so should could I arrive Friday night or will I be missing out on something if I show up that late? Also I see the final day of the interactive conference is the 14th. So should I plan on leaving that night or would is there something going on that would make it better to leave the next morning? I want to make the most out of my experience so any advice would be appreciated.

Brian W – I think there should be a message board or something for people who need roommates. I always roll solo, so I’m not sure, but I bet you could find info on the SXSW site.
Calrion – I want to hit WE some time. Bet that was fun. And yeah, Tantek would be a fun one. Thing is we want to try to do a non-blog site this time.
Brian – Get there Friday and leave Weds if you’re planning on being social, etc. There are “extra-curricular” events like parties and kickball, etc. you might miss if you come later and/or leave earlier.
If you’re just coming to go to the sessions, you could come in any time Saturday and leave Tuesday.

I’ll finally be going. I’ll have to see if this is a good enough conference to get the company to pay for it, but if not, I’m still going anyway. I am really exciting about meeting a hell of a lot of people, so if you see a lonely Filipino with no friends, come up to him and say hi - it’ll probably be me. Either that or I’ll have a big Avalonstar shirt on.
I’m so looking forward to it. :D

I’ll be there for interactive, but probably not music (unless I win powerball, but not buying tickets…)
I’d like to do the Hampton this year. The last 2 years I did Hotwire for the savings (Omni in ‘03 and Hyatt in ‘04), but the Hampton has the location, without the Hilton $$$.

Also, I won’t be making the mistake I made last year - driving to Austin from Santa Fe.
I’ve driven across the country solo several times, but west Texas is a killer.
Worse, I hit a snowstorm on the way home. It took 90 minutes to go 5 miles at one point.
Flying, I might end up having another 2 hour conversation with Nick Finck in the airport.

I will more than likely be there. Staying with family in town.
3rd year in a row. Better everytime!
The Fantasy League gonna get together this time?

I would love to go. I could get most of my money back on my tax return at the end of the financial year, I just need to find the money first. Now how do I justify it to my wife?
Posted on October 13, 2005 08:59 PM | #
I’m there. First year after some 3 years of wanting to go.
Posted on October 14, 2005 12:37 AM | #
I’ll be there!
And I also really I hope I get the opportunity to waste your time with talking a couple of minutes with me. :-)

I’ll be attending for the first time. Pretty, excited.

I was thinking of giving it a miss this year, but I’ve been asked to participate in two panels and all the standardsistas are pressuring me to go, so I’ll probably be there.
I definitely recommend the Hampton. Not only is it cheaper, but the internet access is free, unlike the Hilton. (As of last year, anyway.) It’s almost certainly where I’ll be staying.

The Hampton was the place to be last year. Lodging with the BritPack was quite an adventure.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in March!

I’m a local boy, but I will definitely be attending for my third year. I wonder if Scrivs and Rundle will be back again? I think I saw them hit one panel, but hear they were sighted a many bars. :)

Oh, how I’d love to be there, but my wife had to get knocked up! We are expecting our first child 9 days after SXSW.
“Hey babe, I’m gonna go down to Texas and party with web designers and rock stars. If anything happens, text message me on my cell phone.”
I will probably be at Event Apart in Philly in a couple of months though.

Argh. This was a big spam all about lesbians.
Posted on October 17, 2005 07:53 AM | #
Lets forget all this web 2.0 mumbo jumbo and focus all our efforts on more practical endeavours, like… the eradication of all spam!
I attended the 2003 HOW design conference and ‘95,’98 siggraph conferences. HOW was cool, but not sure if it was worth the price tag. This SXSW festival is much cheaper than the how conference, and I’m sure its worth it… I mean its Austin, music, films, geeks, and beer!! Can you tell I’m talking myself into attending? Austin is only 5 hrs for me. OK, count me in… ALL in. On to the registration booth…

I’m going to be there and staying at the Hampton between the 9th and 15th. As in, flying in on the 9th, leaving the 15th.
I’ll see a bunch of you guys there! It’s going to be my first SXSW so I’m really looking forward to it. :-)

i’m hoping to go again this year - i enjoyed your “Design Eye” panel last year - but we’ll have to see if the budget allows.
we stayed at the hampton inn last year, it was great. too bad it’s already sold out for this year! :(
Posted on October 20, 2005 07:58 AM | #
oh wait, just kidding. i read the site wrong - the hampton inn is only sold out for the music festival. oops :)
Posted on October 20, 2005 08:06 AM | #
geeky – wow, it’s sold out for music already. I booked mine (for music too) just last week.
Posted on October 20, 2005 09:59 AM | #
I’m hoping to make it this year. I’m not sure how quickly they sell out, but I hope to buy a platinum entry around the middle of December. It’ll be my first trip to SXSW, and my first trip to Austin.
Really looking forward to it. Music geekery + Tech geekery = One very promising experience.

I’m hoping to make a return trip this year from the new work location. BTW, looking at your previous post - I caught Coheed and Cambria and that tour here in Denver during my first week in town. Great show, great new CD.

I am at the Hampton as well and I have it on good authority that the Britpack has booked it as well.

I’m trying hard to be there. And yes, Hampton for sure :)
Posted on October 28, 2005 06:41 PM | #
Just made my reservation at the Hampton. I was going to try find a way to bunk up w/ someone else, but I didn’t want to miss getting a room all together. I’m getting there friday and leaving wednesday. Lookin forward to seeing some of yous guys in person.

I’ll be there, with a coworker of mine. Will be good to meet you and the rest of the 9rules folk.

I’ll be going for the first year, however the Hampton is now booked during those times, so I’m staying at the Crowne Plaza. Hopefully I’m still allowed to crash some of the parties at the Hampton.

First time this year for me too, so the Hampton it is! Can’t wait to meet all you fine people!
